It was the middle of a Sunday afternoon when I arrived at a Mount Wellington Crossfit Gym to meet Siuea Cocker. She recently found out she had qualified for the 2017 Arnold Classic Strongman Championships in Australia, and with good reason, the girl can lift. Her strength was matched only by her bubbly personality which made talking to her really easy. Siuea told us of the struggles she faced as a female in a male dominated sport, and how she encouraged others to not let it stop them from giving the sport a go. But it was more than the powerlifting sport itself, Siuea was sharing her experiences about choosing careers, and who to seek help from as part of a Careers NZ project to encourage more Year 10 Pacific students to start thinking about their career journey.
